Norwegian expands to daily Shannon-New York flights

Sheetal Sukhija - Monday 16th April, 2018

SHANNON, Ireland - The budget airline, Norwegian is set to expand its Shannon-New York service to offer daily flights from October.

The airline has said that it will be increasing the number of flights. up from four flights per week.

In July last year, the budget airline began transatlantic routes from Shannon, Dublin, Cork and Belfast.

On Monday, the airline said that it had begun selling seats starting from 139 euros for the expanded service.

According to the announcement, the new schedule will commence on October 28 and takes Shannon to its largest number of U.S. services in over 17 years.

Currently, six airlines are operating to seven destinations in the U.S.

Commenting on the announcement, Shannon’s managing director, Andrew Murphy, said the decision “clearly demonstrates Norwegian’s commitment at Shannon and will bring our transatlantic capacity to 565,000 seats.”

Meanwhile, Matthew Thomas, the airport’s chief executive said that the news was “proof” of Shannon’s importance to tourism in the west and along the Wild Atlantic Way.

He said in a statement, “This expanded service is the result of a close collaboration involving a dedicated team of Shannon Airport and Norwegian Air International. It illustrates the huge market there is for the unique Irish tourism product on this side of the island. To have an expanded daily service to New York speaks volumes, too, about Shannon’s significance in the transatlantic market.”

Norwegian has said that it will be using existing aircraft based at Stewart to service the increased New York route and that the planes are being used to operate the current summer schedule from Shannon.

Thomas Ramdahl, Norwegian COO said in a statement that it is boosting services that “reflect strong passenger demand.”

The airline previously announced it was cancelling services to TF Green from Shannon and Cork this winter.
