CALIFORNIA, U.S. - After unveiling new features focussed on the one-on-one conversations throughout the start of the year, now WhatsApp has shifted its focus on group chats.
The Facebook-owned popular messaging service has now rolled out new features for Group users, that include improved administrator controls, amongst other things.
The messaging application said that it is now shifting its focus with the aim of making the experience better for group users as well as give them more control on their groups.
The company said that while it already has features on groups that allow users to remain in a group but avoid all the commotion at the same time, now new features have been introduced.
WhatsApp said it has introduced new features for groups that make it difficult for users to be re-added to groups they’ve already left.
The company said in a press statement, “Groups have been an important part of the WhatsApp experience, whether it's family members connecting across the globe or childhood friends staying in touch over the years. There are also people coming together in groups on WhatsApp like new parents looking for support, students organizing study sessions, and even city leaders coordinating relief efforts after natural disasters. Today, we're sharing improvements that we've made to groups.”
The features, which are available for Android and iOS users on WhatsApp include adding description to their groups.
The feature can reportedly be found under ‘Group Info.’
WhatsApp said that the feature allows any group member to add a group description however, the admin can restrict actions.
According to the app, the group description will appear on top of the chat sitting just below the group name.
Another feature introduced mention ‘@’ feature for group chats and even though it was added in 2016, it didn’t take off with the same functionality as Facebook did.
Now, the same feature comes with better user facility as users will be allowed to check on messages where they’ve been mentioned and reply directly.
The ‘@‘ icon is visible on the side as a user scrolls through the unread group chats on WhatsApp.
The company added that it has also made it easier for people to search for group participants online - looking for them on the ‘Group Info’ page.
Further, WhatsApp said that it has also started giving more control to group admins.
Admins now have the power to remove permissions for other group members, including changing the group subject, icon and description.
Further, the new feature ensures that group creators cannot be removed from the group they started.
